about

Man... I have always suffered for my open mind when it comes to music.

I remember in Primary school when most kids were listening to chart music, I was listening to 50's rock 'n' roll, 60's girl groups and ABBA. And I was quite open about it too. Kids aren't very forgiving though if you stand out even a little bit.

Back in 2007, I heard the music of an artist whose name I knew, but I didn't know very much about her. The music I was listening to was an album called 'Yes, I'm a Witch', by Yoko Ono. I fell in love with her music almost instantly.

The lyrics, about turning negatives into positives, being at one with yourself and with others, questioning what we believe to be the norm, pushing the boundaries of art, music, lyrics and singing. As I got more of her albums and read more of her history, I was becoming more fascinated with her journey.

When you love music, you obviously want to share it with people and so ever since 2007, I have been playing her music to people and talking about her a lot. I have never been met with so much resistance. I feel like people have been brainwashed to dislike her without barely knowing anything about her. But that is a different story.

Yoko has been a massive inspiration to me in the last few years. I think she has always been more than happy being an outsider, but personally I am thrilled to see her getting rave reviews for her latest albums from the likes of Pitchfork, Uncut, Rolling Stone, Mojo and Q Magazine. I wanted to pay some respect to Yoko for this inspiration so I took a song from her 2009 album, a song that is originally very gentle, slow and heartfelt and I made it into a kind of gritty electronic, psychedelic version of my own.

lyrics

He was standing on the seventh floor opening the door
"Welcome to life!" he said
He was on the top of the game as it were
"Welcome to the world" he said, with a guff

One day, years later I heard quiet footsteps
Approaching slowly from behind
I turned around, we hugged each other
"Welcome to time," I said
The great equaliser of all things

I know my little memory of footsteps will be
Swallowed into eternal oblivion
By the ruthless ocean called the Universe
But for now it’s there with all its might

Like the death of a butterfly in the child’s heart
My life, my love, but mostly love
Thank you for being here and now
Thank you for being you…
